The Importance of Trees

In Hamilton, there has been an increase in urban expansion and development as a result of people moving here from bigger cities such as Toronto. The need for more houses and complexes has caused us to cut into our beautiful forests and natural habitats. This is why we are educating and advocating for people to start planting trees in their own backyards and parks here in Hamilton.

Trees are known have many benefits for the health of our environment and for the health of humans. It has also been proven that trees can also have a positive impact on our economy.

Hamilton has the third most polluted air in Ontario according to IQAir, but an increase in urban forest can help us combat air pollution. Trees take in carbon dioxide and release oxygen for us to breath. Trees have also been proven to decrease the surface temperature of cities, helping combat climate change. Urban forests improve water filtration, store water, and reduce stormwater runoff. Trees also provide a habitat for the wildlife living in Hamilton.

Urban forests not only benefit the environment of our city but also the health of Hamiltonians. Urban forests provide recreation areas and parks which can encourage us to get outside and exercise. There was also a study that suggested that trees can promote healing for recovering patients in a hospital who have a view. We also have a big homelessness and poverty crisis in Hamilton, but some trees can provide food and shelter to those in need. Urban forests have also been proven to benefit our mental well-being. Trees help reduce stress, heart rate and blood pressure. Urban forests also promote social interactions and a sense of community.

Urban forests have been proven to have a positive impact on visitors and tourists to Hamilton. Trees help us create more attractive and welcoming neighbourhoods and businesses. Trees are also known to drive up property value. The city can also save money on energy costs if more trees are planted.
